APT Presents "The Body and the Psyche" - A Discussion Series on How Changing The Body Affects the Psyche

February 03, 2010
The Association for Psychoanalytic Thought (APT) presents “The Body and the Psyche.”  There will be three events for the series:

February 26 - The Castrato’s Voice, or The Sex of the AngelDr. Anne-Marie Mazzega will approach gender identity from biological and psychological points of view, using as an example the mutilation of young boys in order to create high voices, a practice encouraged by Popes eager to replace the voices of women who were excluded from church choirs since the Middle Ages.  Educated in France, Dr. Mazzega has degrees in psychology and is a classical singer.

March 26 – Cosmetic Surgery and the Star CultureDr. Virginia Blum (Professor of English, University of Kentucky, and research candidate at CPI) is author of Hide and Seek: The Child between Psychoanalysis and Fiction, and Flesh Wounds: The Culture of Cosmetic Surgery.  Dr. Blum’s talk will address why, in recent years, the surgical intervention in one’s appearance has seemed like an increasingly reasonable solution to a host of emotional and professional challenges.  She will look first at the co-emergence of cosmetic surgery and star culture and go on to reflect on the significance of cosmetic surgery makeover programming.

April 30 – Performing Gender: Cross-Dressing and What it tells us about “The Normal.”  Dr. Laura Mandell (Professor of English, Miami University, and research candidate at CPI) will examine and discuss film clips from various movies about sustained instances of cross-dressing based upon Judith Butler’s notion of Gender Performance and how it reflects normal formations of identity, physical and psychic.

All events begin at 6:30 pm with a Wine & Cheese reception – followed at 7:00 pm by the presentation and a discussion.

The events will be held at Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute – 3001 Highland Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio (Corryville).

The events are free for APT members - $5 for non-members.
