CPI faculty is available to APP students at a special rate of $50.00 per hour.
This fee is paid directly to the supervisor. CURRICULUM: A
THREE-TIER PROGRAM OF STUDY The
curriculum makes a genuine effort to integrate the multiple perspectives present
in the contemporary theory of psychoanalysis. Didactic seminars in theory and
technique and one clinical conference are conducted weekly throughout two
academic semesters for 32 weeks per year, beginning the second week in September
and continuing through the second week of June with a break in December. Classes
are held on Fridays for 3½ hours (112 hours per year).
Theory:
the first year theory
seminar focuses in depth on the four primary
models of the mind in which intrapsychic processes that shape behavior and
symptoms are seen as resulting from interactive bio-psychosocial factors. The second
year theory courses review development from a psychoanalytic perspective
and then discuss commonly presenting psychopathologies as they represent
failures or conflicts in development. Technique:
the first year technique seminar focuses on essential elements of
the clinical encounter, engagement, assessment, frame and boundaries,
formulation, transference, countertransference, enactment, interpretation,
working through, and termination. The second year technique
seminar consists of four specialized courses: treatment of traumatic states;
curative factors and processes; brief focal psychotherapy; and multi-modal
treatments. Clinical
Experience & Supervision: The Clinical
Conference in both years gives participants the opportunity to apply their
course work to their own cases in small group presentations to senior CPI
faculty members. Participants are required to carry a minimum of three clinical
cases in intensive psychotherapy throughout the program, and to meet weekly for
individual supervision with faculty of the Institute. Supervisory assignments
are made by the APP Director with the participant's input. Cases for supervision
are selected in consultation with the supervisor from the participant's current
case load. Personal Psychotherapy: A central tenet of the APP is the belief that self-awareness and self-monitoring are critical elements of effective clinical practice. Therefore, each student is advised that engaging in personal psychotherapy is an integral component of becoming an effective psychotherapist. A
