CPI Trustee Oliver “Tony” Birckhead, III, Ed.D. Passed Away July 29, 2016

Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute Trustee, Oliver “Tony” William, III, Ed.D., 68, of Cincinnati, Ohio, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 29th, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family, friends, and his favorite music. Tony was a talented musician, photographer, and psychologist.

Dr. Birckhead was a clinical psychologist and had been the director of the Health and Counseling Center at Xavier University. Before and after that, he was in private practice. He spent about 15 years working in community mental health centers in Maine and here in Cincinnati. Tony received his Masters degree from the New England branch of Antioch University and came back to Cincinnati to earn his doctorate from the University of Cincinnati in 1990. Tony loved working with people in health care. He considered being entrusted as a psychologist to listen to peoples stories a privilege, and found it always interesting, sometimes fascinating and often moving. He said “The most important thing about being a psychologist is not giving good, clever or even scientific advice; it is to be a good listener who is always making sure you are understanding what is being told to you.”

He is survived by his loving wife, Leslie; his three children: Oliver, Laura, and Sarah; his brother, Randall; his sister-in-law, Deborah; his two nieces, Rebecca and Elizabeth; and his mother-in-law, Theresa Horlander. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Elizabeth Birckhead. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Cincinnati.
