Clinical Case Discussion: The Fluidity of Gender

Identity in Male Adolescent Development

presented by

Kirsten Dahl, PhD

Saturday, May 21, 2016, 12:45 PM – 2:15 PM

Box lunches available, if pre-ordered

Psychotherapists are becoming more aware of children and adults who present with a disjunction between their biological gender and their experience of their psychological gender. Few clinicians have experience with the treatment of such individuals. As social acceptance grows, people with transgendered identifications will feel more comfortable requesting psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. We will examine some clinical process material with an eye to understanding gender development and its variants.

Kirsten Dahl is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis, where she is Chair of the Child Analytic Training Program. She is in private practice in New Haven, CT seeing children, adolescents and adults. Currently, she is teaching a seminar on adolescence for the analytic candidates. Her graduate training was at Yale University and at Western New England.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will increase their knowledge about gender identity and how it develops.

2. Participants will develop a differential diagnosis for patients who are children and present as transgendered.
